WHAT'S IN AND WHAT'S OUT IN INTERIOR DESIGN

Think you have your finger on the pulse of what's hot in home and interior design? Things change quickly. Today's I-gotta-have-it ikat print chair is tomorrow's garage sale giveaway. Ikat, the global print that has been everywhere, is just one of the formerly hot trends that are now "out" per the Wall Street Journal's (WSJ) list of Top Ten Interior Design Trends.

Granite countertops are a perennial favorite, but... they might actually be on their way out, says Yahoo. They're "expensive and unpredictable," unlike quartz, which is likely to take over granite's crown as fave countertop material. If you're building or remodeling, you might also want to stay away from apron-front sinks. They're also on their way out.
For bathrooms, say goodbye to "strong, angular shapes," saidModern Life. The new shapes " are based heavily on liquid and fluidity."
Also out per the WSJ? Woodland creatures.
"The use of blinky owls, Machiavellian foxes, timid deer and, most recently, mushrooms as decorative motifs in artwork and textiles is verging on kitschy," said the WSJ.
Frankly, we didn't know mushrooms were in. And... we're quite glad they're out.
It's In There!
So what's in? According to the WSJ, colors include "rose quartz, amethyst, topaz, olive, whiskey and raisin." And for wall décor: Macramé.
Yes, macramé. "It's sculpture for your wall that adds texture and replaces wallpaper or fine art you can't afford. And we haven't seen it since the 1970s," they said.
To many, that's a good thing. But if you are looking to incorporate some macramé into your design, we have a suggestion: Raid gramma's house and update with an original -- for free!
The WSJ also likes corduroy, a fabric Design & Trend made part of their Trend Report for the year. Also in the report: acrylic furniture and dark accent walls.
HGTV takes accent walls up a notch, with bold colors in the kitchen and other unexpected places. "We're seeing bolder colors that complement stainless steel, as well as darker cabinet colors. You might frame a stainless-steel sink with a burnt orange or fire-engine red countertop, or inlay hot pink or chartreuse tiles around coffee-colored cabinets. People are viewing kitchens that have too much of any one color as flat, so more color is definitely the way to go."
